1. Develop online reading comprehension skills and strategies within the context of completing purposeful activities geared toward curriculum goals
2. Provide a moderate level of teacher scaffolding, increase the use of peer-to-peer supports.
3. Design lessons so students encounter specific strategies that we believe are important to online reading comprehension within problem solving contests and group
exchange of effective strategies.
4. To minimize teacher talk, students receive a problem(s) for the day to solve in small groups. It is given on a page of paper (backup) and, perhaps, at their blog, wiki, or web page. They solve this problem in groups and then the class checks in the strategies they learned at the end of the class.
5. The initial focus is on locating and critical evaluation strategies.
6. Then, the focus shifts to synthesis and communication with a variety of online communication tools (email, blogs, wikis, google docs, IM)
7. Document progress with the classroom checklist of skills before moving to Phase 3.
8. Regularly have students work in groups to teach the teacher something they think the teacher does not know. This will also teach the others in each group who do not know about it. This is consistent with Reciprocal Teaching principles.
9. Have students work in groups to determine what they know on the checklist. Then share and exchange. Also consistent with Reciprocal Teaching.
10. Tell the students what you really liked about the way they taught you. This prepares them for teaching one another during Stage II. Ex: I really liked the way that you talked me through each step and made me use the mouse while you explained the skill. Also consistent with Reciprocal Teaching.
